Thor #1

The first issue of Jason Aaron's Thor comic book marks the titular character's return. This is my first foray into Thor centric comic books, but because I'm a fan of Jason Aarons's work on Doctor Strange and Punisher MAX, I had to give it a shot. It's funny, exciting, action pack, and its an excellent jumping-on point for fans of the character even if all you know is the movie interpretation.

For starters, this is a very exciting comic. It has a really nice sense of adventure and gets the reader very invested right from the get-go. It's very similar in tone to the latest Thor movie Thor: Ragnarock. This time around like Thor: Ragnarock Thor is without Mjolnir, which gives way to some really funny and well written moments, especially early on when Thor confronts a surprise villain.

This is a big issue, it's about double the size of a regular comic, but I never felt bored. Jason Aaron does a really good job with Thor as a character. I have never read a Thor comic before, so I can't really compare it to the others, but I really loved his portrayal. He has moments of vulnerability, moments of humor, moments of anger, and moments of sheer badassness.

The writing isn't the only good thing about the comic. The art is on point as well. Mike Del Mundo's art is beautiful; it has this watercolor aesthetic, which does a really good job conveying a sense of magic and fantasy. The fight scenes have real weight to them, and despite the art being sort of dream-like, they are easy to follow.

This is a great comic for newcomers. I have absolutely no prior knowledge of Thor comics, and I felt right at home. The writing does a good job giving us enough info, so we are caught up without dedicating a whole issue to it. The art is beautiful, and the action is fun as hell. If you were ever on the fence, I say jump that fence and grab this comic. You won't regret it.
